Understanding water networks
Define the question, organise the inputs and keep assumptions visible.
Begin with a clear question
Before commissioning a network analysis, describe the decision the model should support. A useful brief distinguishes the existing system from proposed changes and identifies the operating scenarios of interest.
Build an input register
Collect the available network layout, elevations, pipe data and supply and demand information. Record the source and date of each dataset and identify gaps rather than silently filling them with assumptions.
Agree the reporting scope
Discuss how assumptions, scenarios and limitations will be reported. The analysis should be interpreted in the context of the project and the quality of the information available.
